Learn to create a mandala in class

Jo Ellen Byrnes, master mandala artist, will teach “How To Create The Mandala (101).”

A mandala is a “spiritual circle that Jung says is a natural form of representing the whole of life,” Byrnes said.

The two-hour classes will be at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Laguna Canyon Artist Studio, 3251 Laguna Canyon Road, Studio B-1.

Each class includes how to lay out the double-spiral mandala and the $30 fee includes materials, paint and 8”x10” canvas.

Retired palettes to be stored

Only 20 “retired” holiday palettes that are too damaged to be displayed have been returned to their originators, said City Manager Ken Frank.

Since April, four palettes have been or are in the process of being returned, 20 have been returned to the artists or their families, seven artists have responded that their palettes can be destroyed or sold and one artist has requested their palette be destroyed, Frank said in his Sept. 18 Friday Update to city staff.

“The remaining 58 palettes will be wrapped in plastic and stored in a secure area of the Corporation Yard, and continued efforts will be made to seek out artists and family members of the retired artists,” Frank said.

Heisler writings sought by group

The Arts Commission is seeking short stories and poems as part of the public art component of the Heisler Park renovation project. The selected short story or poetry will be published in the call for artists and may provide the inspiration for artists who could include the work in its entirety or communicated visually or aesthetically in designs for the public art works.

Those 18 and older who live in Laguna Beach may submit a maximum of 500 words relating to Laguna Beach, its community or personalities, be inspiring and relate in some way to the park.

The deadline is Jan. 15. First place winner will receive $2,000; second place will receive $750; and third place will receive $250.

The competition will be judged by the Arts Commission, with final approval by the City Council
