Junior Midget Silver rallies to win

The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Junior Midget Silver Eagles pulled off a rousing come-from-behind win over the Huntington Beach Chargers, 22-14, on Saturday.

The Eagles were led offensively by Isaiah Davis and Christian Chapin and defensively by Nick Bennett and Bradley Williams.

The game started off ominously for the Eagles as the Chargers scored on a 65 yard run on the third play from scrimmage.

The Eagles however, showed their resilience as they took the kickoff and marched down field, capping the drive on a 10-yard pass from Davis to Bennett. The PAT by Eric Hanson tied the score, 8-8.

The Chargers threatened in the second quarter, but their drive was stalled after Zach Buggelin intercepted a ball in the end zone and returned it to the 1-yard line. After an Eagles’ fumble, late in the second quarter the Chargers would score again to take a 14-8 lead into halftime.

The Eagles started the second half by marching down field once again; this time the drive was capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Chapin. The PAT was no good and the game was again tied at 14.

The Eagles defense settled down and held the Chargers in check during the second half, then in the fourth quarter the Eagles struck again facilitated by Davis connecting with John Kinnear on a screen pass that went for 20 yards to set up a 15-yard run by Davis for the go-ahead touchdown. The PAT by Eric Hanson provided an eight-point margin that proved to be enough to secure an Eagles’ victory.

Hong leads Eagles to win

Phillip Hong scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to lead the Costa Mesa Midget team to a season-opening win against the Stanton Raiders at Jim Scott Stadium Aug. 29.

The Eagles were down by eight at the half and Stanton was clearly dominating the playing field.

But Coach Dennis Atencio pumped the team up at the half and the players took the field ready to control the ball. In the third quarter Derek Atencio recovered a fumble and it was clear the tide was turning to the Eagles’ favor.

Shortly after, Hong pushed up the middle for the Eagles’ first touchdown. Chris Blasing was a standout the entire game with several interceptions.

After regulation time ran out and the game was a tie the California tie-breaker was on, four downs for each team from the 10-yard line. The Eagles’ defense was strong and held the Raiders scoreless. Then Hong ran right up the middle again to score the winning TD.

The Costa Mesa Eagles Jr. Pee Wee Black team, coach by David Atencio, kicked off its season opener in 103 degree heat in Hacienda Heights Aug. 29.

The boys were ready to make more heat as the kick-off team ran down the field screaming toward its onside kick. Jacob Marines recovered the kick-off, but lost it to a fumble giving the Hacienda La Puente Phantoms first offense. The first quarter ended scoreless.

Then early in the second quarter, David Atencio ran the first touchdown, as the offensive line stood solid. The defense stood strong, as the Phantoms were not able to respond. The Eagles led at the half, 6-0.

Opening up the third quarter, Gasper Ramierez ran in the Eagles’ second TD. Charlie Godshall sacked the QB and caused a fumble on the first down for the Phantoms. Then David Atencio ran in a 75-yard touchdown with the Phantom defense running helplessly in tow.

The game closed out with Phantom offense running in a touchdown that could have been negated by a penalty. But the Eagles’ coaching staff refused the call allowing a final score of 26-6.
