Vanguard delivers upset

SAN MARCOS — Junior Karri Currier scored in the 54th minute to lead the No. 23-ranked Vanguard women’s soccer team to a 1-0 nonconference win against No. 12-ranked Cal State San Marcos Wednesday.
Senior goalkeeper Jillian Foss made two saves for her third shutout of the season as the Lions (3-0) have not been scored upon in 2009.
Freshman Amanda Couch had the assist for Vanguard.
Currier finished with six of the Lions’ eight shots.
San Marcos fell to 2-2-1.
The Lions play host to Chapman Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Briana Fields had 13 kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-5, 25-18, 25-10 verdict in the nonconference season opener Wednesday at home.
Poevara Gantt chipped in 10 kills, Kimya Jafroudi had 24 assists and Nikki Osuna added 15 digs for the winners.
Glendale is now 1-3.
OCC visits San Diego City Friday at 6 p.m.
