Shields earns top swimming honor
Edison High graduate Tom Shields has been named the national Male High School Swimmer of the year by Swimming World Magazine.
Shields, headed to Cal, broke the national high school record in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming it in 1 minute, 33.83 seconds at the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries in May. His time of 1:34.85 in the finals still beat the old national record, and Shields also won the 100 butterfly at CIF (44.75) and anchored the winning 400 free relay team (3:05.27).
Shields ended his high school career as four-time CIF champion in the 200 free.
