Golf with Brinkley
The Newport Harbor football boosters will play host to the Jeff Brinkley Newport Harbor Golf Classic on Monday at the Newport Beach Country Club.
The golfing will start with a noon shotgun, but registration begins at 10 a.m. and a buffet lunch will be served at 11 a.m.
The classic costs $2,000 per foursome, or $500 per player, and includes a buffet lunch, tee prizes, premium wines, cigars and cocktails and appetizers following the golf.
To not play golf and only join the social activities, the cost is $150.
Brinkley, entering his 24th season with the Sailors, is four wins from reaching 200 with the Tars.
Newport Harbor opens the season Sept. 11 at Aliso Niguel.
Checks should be payable to Newport Harbor Football Boosters. Visa, Mastercard and American Express is also accepted. For additional information, contact Tom Kinder at (949) 283-5555.
Tavelli leaves Lions
Josh Tavelli, a former UC Irvine baseball player who spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Vanguard University, has left the Lions program to join the staff at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Vanguard Coach Ralph Grajeda said recently.
Grajeda, who guided Vanguard to a 19-28 record in his first season at the helm, said he has also hired Ruben Corral to replace Randy Wishmyer as pitching coach.
Wishmyer spent four seasons coaching at Vanguard and, in addition to guiding the pitchers, coordinated the program’s strength and conditioning last season. He left to take a job in the private sector, Grajeda said.
Grajeda said he has not yet hired Tavelli’s replacement.
