Damion opens upset

NEWPORT BEACH — Chris Damion, a recent Corona del Mar High graduate, had a short stay in the 20th annual Balboa Bay Club Junior Tennis Tournament Tuesday.

Damion, the top seed in the boys’ 18 singles division, was upset in his first match, in the Round of 32.

Joshua Kameel of Los Angeles beat Damion, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

However, other locals were able to advanvce.

Corona del Mar High senior-to-be Ryan Peyton, the fourth seed, advanced to the Round of 16, as he beat Fullerton Mark Mahan, 6-2, 6-2. Peyton will play against Benjamin Redhead today at 3:30 p.m.

Newport Beach resident Pierce Stemler also advanced to the Round of 16, with a 6-2, 6-4 upset againt No. 12-seeded Jordan Brown of San Diego. Stemler will play against Ahdiy Nathan, the No. 6 seed from Rancho Santa Margarita, today at 3:30 p.m.

There will be an all-local match today at 3:30 p.m., featuring No. 3-seeded Shane Korber, an incoming junior for CdM, against Newport Beach resident Dante Saleh.

Saleh beat Fullerton’s Greg Paik, 6-2, 7-5. Korber beat Santa Ana’s Trevor Zaret, 6-0, 6-1.

 In girls’ 14 singles, Newport Beach resident Blake Bakkila beat Lexie Terez Buttle of Surfside, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to today’s Round of 16. Bakkila will play against Hilary West, the No. 5 seed of Simi Valley, at 8 a.m.

Newport Beach resident Olivia Dajee, the No. 7 seed, beat Nicole Millado of Irvine, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Dajee will play against Noor Schepers of Irvine today at 8 a.m.

 In girls’ 16 singles, Newport Beach resident Kalika Slevcove, the No. 12 seed, defeated Aislin Elkin of Laguna Beach, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 16. Slevcove will play against Annika Ringblom of Palos Verdes Estates today at 11 a.m.

Costa Mesa resident Samantha Stalder, the No. 15 seed, beat Newport Beach resident Jessica Beyer, 6-0, 6-2. Stalder will play against No. 3-seeded Krystal Lai today at 2 p.m.

Newport Beach resident Cynthia Waterman, the No. 14 seed, defeated Claudia Park, 6-3, 6-4. Waterman will play against the No. 2 seed, Kendall Heitzner, today at 12:30 p.m.

 In girls’ 18 singles, Kelli Feeley of Corona del Mar High beat Kala Johnson of Huntington Beach, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to today’s Round of 16. Feeley will play against Newport Beach resident Megan Chomeau today at 2 p.m. Chomeau advanced after No. 4-seeded Jamie Raney withdrew because of illness.
