BOYS’ SWIMMING

Sunset League Finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s David Linden, Blake Kelly, Jack Yeager and Ikaika Sarme broke a 29-year-old school record in the 200-yard medley relay to highlight the Sailors’ league championship performance Friday.

The Newport Harbor quartet also set a league record in the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 34.75 seconds, and also set a school and league record in winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.28). The Sailors won the Sunset League title with 492 points, ahead of Edison, which had 402.

Linden also finished first in the 200 individual medley (1:53.76) and won the 100 butterfly (50.71). He was named Co-Swimmer of the Meet, along with Cal-bound Tom Shields of Edison.

Sarme captured a league title in the 50 free (21.44). Kelly touched first in the 100 breaststroke (58.43). Zach Lucas took third in the 500 free and Zach Osadche finished third in the 100 backstroke.

Academy League finals

CERRITOS — Andrew Dorne and Nick Wan won an individual league title each and led Sage Hill School to a second-place finish Thursday.

Dorne won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.4, and finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.14). Wan won the 100 backstroke (56.98) and finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.13).

Dorne, Wan, along with Jake Blitzer and Eric Fish won the 400 free relay (3:28.34). Wan, Josh Lee, Blitzer and Dorne finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:44.7). Sage Hill finished second with 107 points behind Whtiney, which scored 146.

Valley Christian 5

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Nick Ongaro went two for three with a double, triple and two RBIs to help the Lightning take sole possession of first place in the Academy League Friday at San Juan Capistrano Sports Park.

Sean Vogel improved to 2-1 on the mound after striking out five, walking three and allowing two earned runs and two hits in his five innings of work. Chris Griffith went one for two with a three-run home run.

He drew three walks and finished with four RBIs. A.J. Wolfson was two for three for Sage Hill (13-4, 10-3 in league), which plays last-place St. Margaret’s twice next week.

The Lightning can clinch at least a share of the league title Tuesday at St. Margaret’s.

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High junior Kate Klippert set a league record on her way to winning the 100-yard freestyle in 51.05 seconds to help lead the Sailors to a fourth-place finish Friday.

Klippert also finished second in the 500 free (23.49).

Academy League Finals

CERRITOS — Jordan Smith-Newman had two second-place finishes for Sage Hill School, which finished fifth with its two swimmers Thursday.

Smith-Newman was second in the 50-yard freestyle (27.46) and 100 backstroke (1:09.64). Kelly Carpenter finished third in the 500 free (6:19.5).

Pacific Coast League Finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Kelsey Larson won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.84 Friday at Irvine High.

The Sea Kings finished fourth with 330 points. University won with 625 points.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League Finals

NORWALK — Newport Harbor High junior Melissa Hancock won the high jump and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries in the long jump Thursday at Cerritos College.

Hancock cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump and had a 16-5 1/4 mark in the long jump for second place, helping lead the Sailors to a third-place finish.

Newport Harbor had six other girls qualify for CIF, which will be Saturday at Moorpark High.

Allison Krugman (second in the pole vault, 10-8), Lillie Berry (second in the 400 meters, 58.52), Erica Pearson (second in the 3200 in 11:01.11), Gwen Gaylord (third in the 100 in 12.83), Siara Fabbri (third in the pole vault, 10-2) and Tabitha Goff (third in the shot put, 31-7 1/2 ) qualified for CIF.

Shannon Magner, Mary Yeager, Stephanie Hayes and Berry finished third in the 4x400 relay (4:04.44) to also move on to next week.

Academy League Finals

CERRITOS — Sage Hill School’s Cait Williamson captured an individual league title in two events and helped lead the Lightning to second place Thursday at Gahr High.

Cait Williamson won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 23.78 seconds, setting a league record, and she won the 1,600 in 5:22.86. She finished second in the 3,200 in 13:04.82.

Sage Hill scored 129 points, behind St. Margaret’s, which had 152.

Megan Kim won the 100 in 13.13, and finished second in the 200 in 27.74. Jackie Dion qualified for next week’s CIF Division IV preliminaries in three events. She won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch, a league and school record. She also finished second in the 400 in 59.01 and second in the pole vault (8-0).

Megan Culbertson on the shot put (27-6 1/2 ). Katherine Nagasawa finished second in the 300 hurdles (53.62).

Molly Vorwerck, Maddie Culberson, Sophia Herzlinger and Kim finished third in the 4x100 relay in 53.21 to move on to next week.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League Finals

NORWALK — Newport Harbor High junior Cecil Whiteside won the shot put title (54 feet, 7 1/2 inches) to help the Sailors finish second Thursday at Cerritos College.

Whiteside finished second in the discus (170-1), his best event. But he has been nursing a sore wrist, Newport Harbor Coach Nowell Kay said. Esperanza Jake Pendleton won discus (181-2) Friday at Huntington Beach High, helping the Aztecs win the league championship.

The Sailors had six others who qualified for next week’s CIF Division II preliminaries.

Jake Taylor (second in the shot put, 52-2 1/2 ), Michael Taylor (second in the 3,200 in 9:36.23), Mark Sakioka (second in the pole vault, 14-0), Max Van Bergh (13-6 qualifying standard for seventh in the pole vault), Jake Dawson, senior (third in the 3200 in 9:37.48) and Justin Adams (third in the high jump, 6-0) all move on.
