Zoe Garrett and Mychaela Miller may be contributors in the indoor volleyball game for USC, but they showed they can do a thing or two on the sand as well.
Garrett and Miller, the Laguna Beach High volleyball alumni, helped the Trojans win the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships on April 18. The event, part of the fourth annual Alt Games, was held in conjunction with the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour stop in Riverside.
The tournament had four flights. Garrett and teammate Geena Urango won Flight B, defeating Texas’ Kiley Hall and Heather Kisner, 12-15, 15-12, 15-10, in the final. Miller and Emilie Stewart teamed up to place third in Flight D.
USC’s Jessica Gysin and Alex Jupiter won Flight A to help the Trojans win the team title with 37 points.
Miller, a junior setter at USC, and Garrett, a junior middle blocker, were both members of the Breakers’ 2006 CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship squad. The Breakers advanced to the Division III state finals that year before losing to Campolindo in five games. USC also includes Laguna Beach product Paige Obradovich, who didn’t attend the beach tournament.
Television coverage of the event will kick off with a one-hour program airing at 11 a.m. on May 16, on CBS.
