MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 6, UC Riverside 1

RIVERSIDE — Freshman No. 1 singles player Fabian Matthews won, 6-4, 6-0, to help the Anteaters win a share of the Big West Conference title Saturday.

It is the second straight Big West co-championship for UCI (11-14, 4-1 in conference).

UCI won five of six in singles, with Khunpol Issara, Sam Gould, Zac Tsai and Shimpei Suzuki earning victories.

Orange Coast 6, Long Beach 3

COSTA MESA — Mykal Stokes went three for four with two runs scored for the Pirates in the nonconference game Saturday.

Brett Wallach added two hits a run scored and two RBIs for OCC (24-9), ranked No. 1 in Southern California. Scott Stidham hit a double and had two RBIs, Ricky Stokes added a hit and two runs scored and Ryan Dunn picked up two hits and drove in a run as well for the Pirates.

Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. — The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for fifth in the event that concluded Saturday at Karsten Golf Club.

Host Arizona State won the 17-team tournament with a 54-hole score of 838. San Diego State and Denver tied for second at 856, TCU finished fourth at 857 and UCI and Arizona shot 858.

Arizona State’s Stephan Gross, with a 71 in Saturday’s final round, and New Mexico’s Steve Saunders (68) tied for medalist honors at three-under 210.

UCI senior Sean Shahi finished ninth at even-par 213 after shooting a two-under 69 Saturday. Freshman Roberto Francioni, with a 71 in the final round, placed 16th at 214, while three UCI players tied for 46th at 219: junior John Chin (71), freshman Michael Im (74) and sophomore Bryan Harris (75).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 11, Cal Baptist 6

UC Irvine 11, UC Santa Barbara 10 OT

IRVINE — Junior Erin Kiene scored on a power play with 2:19 left in the second overtime period and the No. 9-ranked Anteaters held on to beat the No. 16-ranked Gauchos in a Big West Conference match Saturday.

Senior Gianna Rossi scored seven goals Saturday, including four in the win against Cal Baptist and has now scored in 14 straight matches for UCI (19-9, 3-0 in conference). She has 60 goals.
