GREER’S BEST BUYS:

Here’s a reason to be happy. Orange County’s first Happy Hour Week starts Sunday! OC restaurants, bars, pubs and breweries will unite for the launch of Happy Hour Week, which takes place from Sunday to April 18.

The inaugural event will promote the best drinks and appetizers with many restaurants offering Happy Hour all day throughout the week.

You can get a glimpse of the action starting at 6 tonight through April 17, at Bloomingdale’s Home Store at South Coast Plaza.

Seven dynamic drink mixers from the county’s top restaurants will demonstrate their skills behind the bar as they showcase cocktails featured on their Happy Hour Week menus.

The demonstrations, which are free to the public, include alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (as long as you’re older than 21, you can sample drinks).

Some demonstrations will include a bar appetizer.

For a complete list of mixers and their schedules at Bloomingdale’s Home Store go to www.happyhourweek.com/ Mixology_Masters.html.

The official Happy Hour Week website lists participating establishments (more than 60) and their special bar menus for both food and beverages, many of which will include specialty “mocktails” (non-alcoholic options).

Happy Hour Week is produced by the Orange County Restaurant Assn. You can find out more information by visiting www.HappyHourWeek.com.

Summer activities

It’s time to make summer plans for kids. And here are well-supervised, well-organized programs that are ideal for beach-minded kids: Ocean Adventure Programs and Erik Nelsen’s Quiksilver & Roxy Surf Camp offer a variety of fun Ocean Summer Camps.

Ocean Adventure Programs mission is to make learning an adventure with five different summer programs: Ocean Adventure Science Camp, Minnows Science Camp for the young scientist, Skateboard Camp, Art Camp and Girls Vibrant Yoga.

All camps are morning activities and conclude with an afternoon spent at the beach: snorkeling, swimming, learning ocean safety and exploring the unique tide pools.

Six one-week programs start July 6 and end Aug. 14.

For the early registration discount, sign up by May 6 and receive $50 off registration.

Ocean Adventure Programs’ Erik Nelsen will direct Quiksilver and Roxy Surf Camps with the same passion for the ocean that was passed down to him from his father, Jeff.

Erik, with his 23 years of surf camp experience, will teach your child the basics of surfing and ocean safety.

Northern Newport Beach, with gentle waves and a sandy bottom, is the ideal environment for learning. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided.

His 4-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio ensures safety. Each day a new ocean lesson is taught, practiced and remembered to ensure a well-rounded junior surfer.

The program’s for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 years. It’s available 11 weeks, June 22 through Sept. 4.

For the early registration discount, sign up by May 6 and receive $75 off registration.

This weeklong program ends Friday with a pizza party, (parents welcome), a goody-bag handout and a signed autograph from a visiting professional surfer.
