COMMUNITY & CLUBS:

The eighth annual Newport Beach Relay for Life kick-off meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Newport Coast Community Center, 6401 San Joaquin Hills Road, Newport Beach. The program will start at 5 p.m.

The Relay for Life is the American Cancer’s Society signature event, a 24-hour fundraiser that also raises awareness to save lives and help those touched by cancer, said Krisztina Scheeff, the Relay for Life online chair.

To date, more than 20 relay teams have been formed from community groups, businesses, service organizations and even schools. Included are the 911 Blue Crew (Fire Department), Costa Mesa Curves for a Cure, Ensign Seabees, Newport Beach Police Explorers, Newport Jaycees and Team Scheeff to name a few.

SPEAKER LEAVES MEETING WITH FOOD AND CASH FOR HUNGRY

Shirley Kohlmeier, secretary for the Exchange Club of Corona del Mar, reported that Linda Lewis from the Second Harvest Food bank was the speaker at the recent meeting of the club and left the meeting with 73 pounds of donated food and $42 for the hungry of Orange County. Five club members are also scheduled to visit the Second Harvest Food Bank facility in Irvine to see how they might help. “We need to continue to serving the community this way — it is especially critical at this time,” Kohlmeier added.
