Scoring big

The Orange County Sport and Social Club plans to score touchdowns for tots during its first “Charity Bowl” event in Huntington Beach.

The club, a social network that draws people together through sporting activities, is hosting the football tournament to raise money for Toys for Tots, in the spirit of giving back to the community and the holiday season, the club’s President Gus Mundth said.

“All of the proceeds will benefit the charity,” he said. “We’re also encouraging participants and spectators to donate non-perishable food items for the OC Food Bank.”

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and will feature 10 to 15 coed teams who will compete in a tournament bracket in two-hand touch football.

“The first games will be chosen randomly, and winners will move up from there,” Mundth said. “Each team is guaranteed at least three games.

“Whether you signed up as a team or an individual, or are just there to watch, it’s a great way to interact with new people and make friends.”

The event will conclude with a happy hour, buffet dinner and a ceremony at Savannah at the Beach Sunday evening.

“We will present Toys for Tots with a check of the money we raised,” Mundth said.

Josh Cobb, a member of the club’s football league since last fall, said while he is always excited to play football, he is most excited about this event because it will benefit Toys for Tots.

“I think it’s great that we’re using the league to promote a charity,” he said. “It’s nice to know the money will go to something that will make a difference.”

Amber Thompson, another member of the football league who registered a team for the tournament, said this is a special event.

“My friends and I enjoy doing a lot of things for charity and love to play football, so this is perfect,” she said.

The club, founded in 2005, includes sports like football, dodge ball, kickball and ultimate Frisbee.

“It’s sort of like middle school gym class for adults, with a party afterward,” Mundth said. “When I moved here [from Baltimore], I knew one guy in town and he thought [the club] would be a good way to meet people.

“It’s for people who enjoy sports but love to socialize.”

Each sport runs on a 10-week season, and meets on a different night once a week, which allows members to join more than one sport a season.

“For $60, you get a T-shirt, drink specials from bar sponsors and a new social circle,” Mundth said.
