IRVINE — Spencer Thompson scored the game-winner for the Anteaters in the 85th minute in the final match of the UC Irvine College Classic at Anteater Stadium Monday.

Senior Matt Murphy picked up his seond goal of the season as he converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Thompson was fouled on a breakaway to set up the penalty kick.

The Vikings tied it up, 1-1, in the 80th minute. Five minutes later, Thompson took a throw-in from Murphy down the left side of the box and played it to himself for the gamewinner, as UCI improved to 2-0.

Sophomore goalie Pat Barton had three saves for the ’Eaters. Keeper Nick Harpel had eight saves for the Vikings.

The UC Irvine College Classic concluded with UCI and Seattle each going 2-0 with the Redhawks being named the tournament champion due to tiebreakers. Defender Chris Hodges of Seattle was named the UC Irvine College Classic MVP. Thompson, Murphy and junior Irving Garcia were named to the all-tournament team.

SAN DIEGO — The Anteaters nearly upset the No. 13-ranked Torreros Sunday night, as San Diego scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute of the second overtime period.

Senior goalie Erin Henry had two saves in the match for UCI (1-2). The ’Eaters were called for 18 fouls in the match; including the one setting up the penalty kick. The Toreros were whistled for six fouls in the match.
