BEIJING OLYMPICS: The golden girls

BEIJING — Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High standout, and partner Kerri Walsh captured their second straight gold medal winning their final against China Thursday morning in Beijing.

May-Treanor and Walsh, playing through a steady rain, defeated Wang Jie and Tian Jia, 21-18, 21-18.

In the process, May-Treanor and Walsh did not lose a single set in Beijing and extended their winning streak to 108 matches in a row.

The final was played in front of a packed 12,200-seat Chaoyang Park venue.

According to the Associated Press, at the end of the match, the Americans dropped to their knees on the wet sand, hugging each other before shaking hands with the officials and running to the stands to embrace their friends and families.
