One-stop fun shop

When people check out Get Pluged ‘N — a new upscale bazaar of sorts set to open later this month — Darren Davidson knows they can get a bit confused.

It’ll be part luxury sports car rental spot, part boutique shopping space, part mountain bike and custom golf cart store and rental. And, oh yeah, it’s sort of a club, too. In other words, the sales pitch can be perplexing.

“It started as a bike store,” Davidson said. “Due to the nature of the building and being able to work with some of the local people, it grew by itself.”

Get Pluged ‘N – spelled with one “G” for the alternative appeal and because getpluggedin.com with two “Gs” wasn’t available — is a high-end shopping and motor club. Investors Davidson and Randy Poulson leased the space and brought in local friends to build a collaborative effort toward selling whatever they could offer.

The warehouse off Balboa Boulevard will also feature a tattoo parlor, a clothing store, a motor club with expensive sports cars available to rent, rickshaws for rent, custom golf carts modeled after Ford roadsters for rent, mountain bikes for rent, a clothing accessories store, an art gallery and some other small ventures.

“At this time it looks like let’s throw everything on the wall and see what sticks,” Davidson said.

Despite the ailing economy, Davidson has “heavily” invested his own money. With the help from local business owner Poulson, they have tried to create a one-stop shop for the person who is looking to find a day’s worth of fun in one place — and can afford it all.

“We are after the wealthy people,” Poulson said.

They have the cars, the rickshaws and the golf carts, but they are waiting for the boutiques to be finished and the art work to be delivered. Also, they need clearance from the city on the use of the rickshaws.

Banking on attracting wealthy patrons and the assortment of goods offered, Davidson and Poulson plan for Get Pluged ‘N to be open Labor Day weekend. The main attraction is the motor club.

Whether it is through a membership or individual rental, Get Pluged ‘N offers Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari and other rentals through Stratos Motor club — a premium car-share company.

The shop at 2122 West Balboa Blvd., Newport Beach, has already been getting foot traffic for those interested in what Get Pluged ‘N is. It remains to be seen how it will be defined.

For now, it appears to be a little bit of everything for those in the tax bracket to afford it.

“In the building we bring in the neighborhoods best in class cars, lawn furniture, art, clothing,” Davidson said. “The other part is we get tourists and locals plugged in to the best in class products.”
