Breakers hard at work, even in offseason

Summer workouts began Monday for the Laguna Beach High football program.

Coach Jonathan Todd said 70 players, ranging from incoming freshmen to new and returning players, came out for the camp. The number, he said, was “a good turnout for us.”

Practices will be Monday through Friday each week.

Weight training and practice on the playing field take place each Monday through Thursday, with Fridays devoted to jiu-jitsu and conditioning.

The camp ends Aug. 9. Practice for the 2008 season opens Aug. 18 with two-a-days.

“In summer, you look for individual and team improvement, and I’m looking for leaders to emerge,” Todd said of the summer camp sessions.

On Saturday, Laguna will compete at the Paloma Valley Invitational. On July 17, the Breakers will take on Capistrano Valley Christian in summer play.

Todd said that starting July 25, the players will begin beach workouts.

“We’re doing a workout at a different beach each week, and afterward, we’re going to do a beach cleanup,” he said. “This is part of our community service commitment to the team, which is one of our core values.”
