Library will stay open for AC update

The Laguna Beach Library’s creaky air conditioning system is getting some help.

A new high-tech system is being designed, but in the meantime, the library has patched up the old system — prone to breakdowns — and when needed, will fall back on old-fashioned fans to keep staff and patrons comfortable, county library officials said.

“The air conditioning is up and running,” said Assistant County Librarian Paula Bruce. “We have made modifications to the system so that it is functional.”

A small component in the system will be replaced this summer, but the library will not be closed for lack of cool, as some had feared. No major additional work on the air conditioning or its replacement would be undertaken in the summer, Bruce said.

“We would find a time that doesn’t inconvenience staff and patrons,” Bruce said. “We would still keep the library open and bring in fans as necessary.

“Of course, we always have to reevaluate, depending on what we find when we go in, but I can tell we have no plans in the works to close the branch.”

A new roof-top air conditioner is still in the design phase, according to Bob Genzel, county director of facilities and maintenance.

However, a conceptual proposal for a screen to hide the system has been submitted to the city.

Screening is a county requirement, which for some unknown reason was never installed around the current unit, Genzel said.

The new unit will be about the same size as the one now in use.

“But it will be more energy-efficient, which will save dollars and reduce the carbon footprint,” Genzel said. “And it will definitely be more quiet.

“Our goal is to be a good neighbor in Laguna Beach.”
