Mugged man struck with bottle, kicked, police say

A man was assaulted as he walked through a Westside neighborhood alone Monday night, police said Tuesday.

The man was walking down the sidewalk on Wallace Avenue near Center Street about 9:30 p.m. when three men with shaved heads in their late teens or early 20s approached and demanded his money, Sgt. Bryan Glass said.

The man said he didn’t have any money. Someone smashed a beer bottle on the man’s head, sending him to the ground. The men then kicked him while he was down until he gave up his wallet and cellphone, Glass said.

A family member took him to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was treated for his injuries and hospital staff notified police.

Police did not provide a more detailed physical description of the attackers.
