Newport Hills edges Harbor View

The Newport Hills Killer Whales defeated the Harbor View Dolphins, 705.5 to 632.5, May 31 at the Newport Hills pool in the opening meet of the season for both squads.

The Killer Whales, who were undefeated in the South Coast Swim Conference dual meets a year ago and won the relay finals, were boosted by several strong performances. Recent Mater Dei graduate Patrick White, headed for USC, swam to strong first-place finishes in the 15-to-18-year-old boys’ 50-yard freestyle, 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke.

Other three-time winners for the Killer Whales were Henry Wilde (boys’ 7-8 division 25 free, 25 fly and 50 free); Jake Bays (boys’ 6-and-under 25 free, 25 fly and 25 back) and Taylor Cortens (boys’ 9-10 50 free, 25 fly and 100 individual medley). Cortens tied the 9-10 age division 25 fly pool record of 14.22 seconds, set by Matt Cooper in 1995, and bested his own pool record (1 minute, 13.18 seconds) and team record (1:12.44) by finishing the IM in 1:09.58.

Sophie Wallace (girls’ under 6 age division), Madeline Musselman (girls’ 9-10), Hollace Barden (girls’ 13-14) and Morgan Cortens (boys’ 7-8) all won two races for Newport Hills.

The Dolphins, who won the league finals last year, were led by Ellen Naruse’s two pool records. She won the 11-12 girls’ 50 fly, and set a pool record of 31.27 seconds in the 50 back (breaking a record set by Christina Hewko in 1997). Naruse also set a pool record of 1:08.31 in the 100 IM, breaking the pool record set last season by Green Valley’s Jamie Dang.

In the girls’ 7-8 division, Sienna Secrist was another three-time winner for Harbor View. She won the 25 free, 25 fly and 50 free. Jules Pouch won two events in the girls’ 11-12 division, setting a pool record of 27.12 in the 50 free that broke Shelby Webber’s 2005 mark.

Other two individual events winners for the Dolphins included CdM water polo stars Heather Van Hiel (winner in the 15-18 girls’ 50 free and 50 fly) and Elise Molnar (winner in the 15-18 Girls 50 breast and 100 IM). Pippa Saunders won in the 13-14 girls’ 50 breast and 100 IM, as did Ari Marks in the 13-14 boys’ 50 free and 50 back.

Isle Anderson won in the 15-18 boys’ 50 breast and 100 IM for Harbor View, and Tommy Brooks won in the 11-12 boys’ 50 free and 50 fly.

Individual event times were not the only records broken. The Newport Hills 9-10 boys’ 100 medley relay team of Taylor Cortens (backstroke), Mitch Dean (breaststroke), JT Russell (butterfly) and Nick Schroeder (freestyle) swam a 1:04.18, breaking the old pool record of 1:04.34 set by the NHST foursome of Taylor Cortens, Brett Greenlee, Danny Robertson and Matt McKinnon last year. In addition, the Harbor View 13-14 boys’ medley relay team of Ari Marks, Matt Berry, Jake Bandaruk and Hayden Leach swam 1:53.90 to break the pool record set last year by Green Valley.

Leach, Bandaruk, Berry and Marks also set a new pool record in the 13-14 boys’ free relay.
