The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball program handed out team and individual awards at its annual team banquet at the Emerald Bay Clubhouse.
At the varsity level, senior Shawn Merz was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year and senior Chris Reames took the same honor on the defensive end.
Merz led Laguna with 371 kills and 417 points this season.
Reames was the team leader in digs (173) and averaged 2.5 per game.
“Most of the time, he was a dominant force for us on the left side,” Laguna Coach Lance Stewart said of Merz, who will attend UCLA on an academic scholarship. “When he was on a roll with his jump serve, we scored points in bunches. When he was on, his serves were impassable.
“Chris brought a lot of energy. He was an unbelievable serve receiver, and he passed the ball really well off the serve.”
