WOMEN’S TENNIS
Vanguard 5, Xavier (La.) 1
MOBILE, Ala. — Seniors Jelena Jovic and Olivia Amstad, as well as freshman Anna Valingsten won in singles and doubles to propel the No. 5-seeded Lions into today’s 7 a.m. quarterfinal of the 28th annual NAIA championships.
The Lions (22-4) will meet Golden State Athletic Conference rival Azusa Pacific, the No. 5 seed, today.
Jovic and Valingsten won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, after Jovic won 12 of 13 games at No. 3 singles and Valingsten did not give up a game at No. 5 singles.
Amstad also won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to eliminate No. 13-ranked Xavier.

Graceland 5, Vanguard 4
MOBILE, Ala. — The No. 6-seeded Lions were upset by the No. 12-ranked squad from Iowa, which swept three doubles matches in the first round of the 57th annual NAIA championships.
Vanguard sophomore Florian Lemke, the 2008 Region II Most Valuable Player, was suffering from a lingering illness and did not compete in doubles, forcing Lions Coach Mattias Johansson to adjust the lineup, with unsuccessful results.
Lemke won in three sets at No. 1 singles, while Vanguard’s Dominic Stockler, Tino Brodar and Gregory Chevalier also prevailed at Nos. 2-4 singles.
Vanguard ends its season 14-10.
