Newport 2, Corona Del Mar 1

TheNewport Mavericks marched into the championship game of the Select Boys Under 12 division with exceptional defense anchored by sweeper Emmanuel Jogwe (“The Diesel”) and keepers Ryan Braun and Riley Gaddis. In the first match of pool play Newport faced a determined second seeded Corona Del Mar team coached by Kevan Wilkinson. In the first half the Mavericks struck first when a 30 yard free kick from Jack Binford connected with a streaking Baron Davis as he slammed the ball into the back of the net. However, before the half CDM knotted the score on a 20 yard free kick of their own that eluded a diving Braun. But on this day there was no quit in the Mavericks. In the 50th minute of play Davis crossed a ball from the right and found Sawyer Farmer who gently tapped the ball passed the CDM keeper. From there defenders E. Jogwe, Dominik Folkner and Caleb O’Neil made sure there were few scoring opportunities against Gaddis in the second half.

For 60 minutes the game went back and forth as the Mavericks squandered numerous scoring opportunities having again to rely on their defense. Forwards Carson Poivre and Jehu Jogwe continued to apply offensive pressure with stellar passes from mid-fielders Kevin Tellez and Byron Gutierrez. When the final whistle blew the Mavericks had accomplished their goal with a 0-0 tie. This coming Saturday they will play for the title against the Tustin team of Craig Ennis in a 3:15 p.m. game at The Farm Sports Complex. The two teams tied 3-3 earlier in the season.
