Pablo Contreras came up with a big blast early, and it propelled the Marina baseball team to its first Sunset League victory.
The junior hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning Friday to wipe out a 1-0 deficit the Vikings faced and set in motion an eventual 3-2 win over visiting Newport Harbor.
Marina scored its final run in the second inning to open up a 3-1 lead and held onto the lead the remainder of the way to win for the fifth time in its last six games.
Sophomore Vinny Ponce doubled twice and junior Paul Strong limited the Sailors to just three hits to improve his record to 4-0.
Ocean View split a pair of Golden West League games against Santa Ana last week, defeating the Saints 11-1 on April 1 before falling 8-4 on April 3.
In the 11-1 win, Sean Burleson pitched a complete game allowing four hits with three strikeouts. He also singled and drove in three runs. Senior Scott Baxter went two for four with a double.
In the 8-4 loss, Santa Ana jumped out to a 4-1 lead but behind the solid pitching of reliever Robert Garay, Ocean View fought back to within 5-4 in the fifth. But a recurring heart murmur forced the junior to the bench and he was relieved by junior Andrew Bynum. The Saints went on to score the game’s final three runs.
Despite the loss, Ocean View took the league series from the Saints, winning two of the three games.
“I give credit to the top three hitters for Santa Ana, they had 9 hits between them, but in the end I’m happy we were able to get the season series on them,†Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “That’s going to be big for us later on.â€
The Seahawks were 4-1 in the league heading into this week’s league schedule that included key games against Orange (5-1) and Westminster (4-1) that will alter the look of the league standings.
