2 bring knife, gun to fight

One Newport Beach resident said they were some of the worst screams for help he’d ever heard.

Another said at first he thought the yelling was coming from the TV.

Police continued to search Wednesday for two men armed with a handgun and a knife who invaded a Newport Beach apartment Tuesday night, officials said.

The men, described as in their 20s, broke into the Coronado at Newport South complex at 1800 E. 16th St. shortly before midnight, neighbors said. There were no signs of forced entry. Hours-old blood stains remained on the door frame.

Paramedics treated one victim at the scene for minor injuries, police said. Neighbors said a second man suffered injuries but police did not confirm that information. Police also could not immediately provide a description of the suspects.

Neighbor Laurie Davis said she came home about an hour after the attack and to a hall full of police and one of her neighbors sitting on the floor bleeding.

“He looked busted up,” she said of her neighbor. She said the inside of the house looked messy and blood was everywhere. People regularly go in and out of that house at night, she said.

Another neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said the attack looked personal in nature. One of the two victims had abrasions on his face and claimed he was jumped outside the apartment; the other had a wound on the side of his head, as if “smashed with a beer bottle,” the neighbor said.

Neighbors said a number of young people had been drinking and making noise in the complex that night.

So far, nothing appears to have been taken, police said.

“[The tenants] have not been able to provide us with any actual loss at this time,” Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

A black Volkswagen Jetta was seen racing away soon after the incident, Sailor said.
