Aspiring lifeguards were put to the test Sunday when the Newport Beach Fire Department hosted its annual Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard tryouts. Many apply, but few qualify.
Applicants competed in a 1,000-meter swim test and a 1,000-meter run, swim, run test. The top finishers will be invited to the training academy to become future Newport Beach lifeguards.
The top applicants are invited to a 125-hour training academy held on weekends in the spring. Students learn CPR, first-aid and ocean safety. The top candidates who also pass the background check will be hired for the 2008 summer season. Starting seasonal pay for lifeguards is $16.76 an hour.
