Harbor’s Barnett named Division I Coach of Year

Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo coach Bill Barnett was named Division I Coach of the Year recently, after leading the Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division I title.

Newport Harbor High senior Mimi Bury and junior Nicolina McCall, as well as Corona del Mar juniors Kate Baldoni and Heather Van Hiel, also made the All-Southern California first team in voting by Southern Section coaches.

The Stanford-bound Bury was the Sunset League Most Valuable Player for the Sailors (30-5). The team’s lone captain had 40 goals, a team-high 35 assists and 60 steals for Newport Harbor. McCall, a center transfer from Rosary High, had team-highs of 65 goals and 65 steals for Newport Harbor.

Baldoni, the Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player, had 343 saves in goal for Corona del Mar (26-9), which also advanced to the Division I title game. Van Hiel led the team with 53 goals, adding 45 assists and a team-high 60 steals.

Earning second-team All-Southern California status were Newport Harbor seniors Morgan Vickers and Jessica Robinson, as well as CdM senior Allison Peotter and junior Victoria Kennedy.

Vickers recorded 189 saves. The Cal-bound lefty Robinson had 21 goals, 22 assists and 25 steals for Newport Harbor.

Peotter scored 40 goals and had 37 steals for the Sea Kings, often sparking the CdM counterattack. Kennedy, a two-meter player, had 50 goals and 51 steals for the Sea Kings.

Newport Harbor seniors Erin Reid and Amanda Simons, as well as CdM junior Elise Molnar, earned third-team All-Southern California honors. Foothill senior Emily Klug was named Division I Player of the Year.
