Two Newport-Mesa residents died early Thursday in a single-car accident on the 405 Freeway that prompted the California Highway Patrol to close the Bristol Street offramp for more than three hours.
A spokesman for the highway patrol said the driver, Richard Saryan, 27, of Costa Mesa, and the passenger, Valerie Faeyka, 26 of Newport Coast, were killed shortly after 2:20 a.m. when their 2004 Saturn left the offramp, rolled down an embankment and landed on its roof on the Bristol Street offramp.
Officers shut down the offramp at 2:32 a.m. and reopened it at 6:08 a.m. No other cars were involved in the accident.
