Foundation plans artistic fundraiser

The Endangered Planet Foundation will host “One Earth

One Dream,” an exhibition, fundraiser and concert, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. March 20 at [seven-degrees], 891 Laguna Canyon Road.

The show will feature the art of Elizabeth Laul Healey and Nicholas Hernandez. Hernandez’s son Nick-i, of the band Common Sense, will also perform works from his new solo album, which will debut at the event.

Healey’s exhibition, “All Over the Bored,” will feature works ranging from contemporary art to “figure mosaics” utilizing mannequins.

Hernandez will showcase his new sculpture Mata (Mother Earth) and Emergence; the latter was honored in 2005 with the Lorenzo il Magnifico de Medici Award for sculpture at the respected Florence Bienniale.

Today he serves as the foundation’s director of art, and coaches Laguna Beach High School’s tennis team.

A surprise artist will also be shown at the event.

Seating is limited; tickets range from $75 general admission, to $100 for 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. seatings, to $150 for VIP seated.

Sawdust hosts spring art classes

The Sawdust Art Festival has announced its upcoming Spring Into Art weekend workshops will be March 15 and 16, 29 and 30, and April 5 and 6.

Professional artists will guide students of all levels from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays on the Sawdust grounds.

Class fees include two days of instruction, all materials and catered lunches. Each class is limited to 10 students. Classes are $150 unless noted otherwise below.

The weekend of March 15, Loren Chapman will teach glass blowing ($250); Cherril Doty and Suzette Rosenthal will lead a Mixed Media Playtime; Charleine Guy will teach oil painting; Dennis Junka will teach flower arranging; Karen Mills will lead a class on painting watercolor flowers on rice paper; and Susan Wade will teach painting with acrylics.

The weekend of March 29, Joan Corman will lead a new course in experimenting with acrylic painting techniques; John Eagle will teach impressionist oil painting; Dennis Junka will teach flower arranging; Reem Khalil will teach techniques in silk painting ($200); James Koch will teach a new course in metal and wire sculpture; and Christopher Jeffries will teach glass blowing ($250).

The weekend of April 5, Grace Barrack and Mike Panetta will lead a course in glass blowing, bead making, torch work and glass sculpture ($250); John Eagle will teach impressionist oil painting; Dennis Junka will teach flower arranging; Karen Pety will teach how to paint watercolor landscapes and koi on rice paper; and Suzette Rosenthal and Cherril Doty will teach on backgrounds, textures and image transfer.

On March 15 and 29, Mike Tauber will teach a new class on cuerda seca, an ancient method of tile painting using wax resist methods and glazes.

On March 16 and 30, Sherry Bullard will lead a ceramic art workshop where she will teach hand-building and glazing techniques in clay; Mike Tauber also will teach a new class on cuerda seca, an ancient method of tile painting using wax resist methods and glazes.

The festival will also host its annual Art Studio Tour April 12; the summer festival will be from June 27 to Aug. 31.

Grace Slick to bring new exhibit to Laguna

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Grace Slick will bring her latest art exhibit to Wentworth Gallery, 305 Forest Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. March 15.

A highlight of her current collection is “Monterey,” honoring the iconic 1967 pop festival’s 40th anniversary.

Slick’s artwork includes portraits of legendary musicians and the Wonderland Suite, her interpretation of the Alice in Wonderland books.

During the exhibit, Slick will be signing dedications and taking photos with collectors who purchase one of her limited edition pieces.

Locals join cast of CHOC Follies

Several Lagunans, including Suzy Elghanayan, Shawn Hoctor, Heidi Miller and Penny Pralle, will perform in CHOC Follies XI: Waiting for CHOCMAN “” A Musical Mockumentary, a comic musical benefiting Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Nearly 100 of Orange County’s business, civic and society leaders will hit the stage at 8 p.m. Thursday 13, 8 p.m. March 14, and 2 and 8 p.m. March 15 at the Chapman University Memorial Auditorium in Orange.

Under the guidance of professional director John Vaughan, the show has netted more than $3 million for CHOC.

Tickets are now on sale, and range from $35 and $125, which includes an after-show cast party.

This year’s show is a spoof of the Christopher Guest film “Waiting for Guffman.”

Cove celebrates women’s sensuality

Cove Gallery, 1492 S. Coast Hwy., No. 8, will host a one-night showcase of artist Michelle Geromel’s works in special event called “Devina ““ A Celebration of Female Sexuality, Empowerment & Strength,” with guest performances by OC Pole Fitness founder Collette Nicole Kakuk, from 7 to 10 p.m. March 14.

Geromel has gained recognition for her renderings of women in provocative poses. This is Geromel’s seventh show within Southern California in the course of a year.

Geromel’s work highlights the beauty of the female body through use of accentuated lighting and color values.

A new Geromel painting will be unveiled that night, and rarely seen ink sketches on watercolor paper will be on display. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Playhouse announces gala event

The Laguna Playhouse will host its 87th season gala from 6 to 11 p.m. May 3 at the Montage Resort & Spa.

The event will include cocktails, dinner and dancing, as well as an opportunity drawing to lease a hybrid Lexus SUV.

Co-chaired by Ilona Martin and Sindi Schwartz, the cocktail attire/black tie optional event will honor celebrated author and playwright Mitch Albom, who has had two of his plays produced at Laguna Playhouse: “And the Winner Is,” and “Tuesdays with Morrie.” The latter is also the most successful memoir ever published.

Several underwriting opportunities are available; a limited number of individual tickets are available for $500 each.

Stone-carving classes scheduled

The Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road, will host stone-carving workshops beginning March 29 with master stone carvers Marvin Johnson and Joseph Sovella.

The 10-week workshop will take place Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be outside. No prior experience is necessary, but the class will cater to all skill levels.

Sovella has taught at Laguna College since 1986, and Johnson began in 1992. They have both been Laguna residents for more than 20 years.

Artist presented with prestigious award
