Hoag recognizes National Sleep Awareness Week

This week promises to be a hectic one for Hoag Hospital, as the Toshiba Classic golf tournament aims to raise more than $1 million for the hospital’s programs. But ironically, it’s also the week Hoag encourages people to catch up on their sleep.

The National Sleep Foundation plans to celebrate National Sleep Awareness Week today through Sunday, holding nationwide polls and conferences on the biological importance of a good night’s rest. Meanwhile, the Hoag Sleep Disorders Center has invited patients to make an appointment if they’re having trouble sleeping.

The center at 1501 Superior Ave., Suite 202 in Newport Beach operates as a physician office from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and opens every night from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. for sleep testing. Patients looking to be evaluated can call (949) 764-8070.

“Many people do not realize that an adequate night’s sleep is needed to ... stay fully alert during the day,” said Paul Selecky, the center’s medical director, in a release. “There is a small but significant increase in auto accidents the Monday after the [daylight saving] time change due to the loss of sleep and the disrupted sleep-wake cycle.”
