Estancia scores upset over Breakers

COSTA MESA — Before Agustin Heredia’s first year as the boys’ basketball coach at his alma mater, Estancia High, he believed 12 wins was possible.

The Eagles recorded No. 13 in an Orange Coast League upset Friday night at home that closed out the regular season.

For a team with zero league wins and going 2-24 overall last year, Mark Allred delivered it in dramatic fashion before Estancia heads into the playoffs.

The senior hit a game-winning jumper at the buzzer, helping the Eagles hand two-time league champ Laguna Beach a 53-52 loss, the Breakers’ first in league. The victory resulted in Estancia (13-13, 5-4 in league) finishing in second place, earning the league’s second berth into the playoffs, and beating the Breakers for the first time in the two-year-old OCL.

“I’m not sure a lot of people believed this was possible,” said Heredia, whose team will learn of its CIF Southern Section Division III-A first-round opponent Sunday, when the playoff pairings are released. “But look at us now. We’re playing really well and hard.”
