Speech and Hearing Center founder receives award

Newport Beach resident Margaret Anne Inman, founder of the Providence Speech and Hearing Center in Orange, recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at The 11th Annual Regional Center of Orange County Spotlight Awards.

In the 1960s, Inman, a speech pathologist at St. Joseph’s Hospital, determined there was a need for more comprehensive services for children with speech and language disorders.

With help from the community, Inman received funding and opened the Providence Speech and Hearing Center in 1965. In 1978, Providence received accreditation by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Assn., and remains the only facility in Orange County with that distinction.

A new state-of-the art facility was opened in the 1980s. Providence added services for adult clients and expanded existing services.
