Segerblom, Mason come from behind to win it all

Andrew Mason and Chris Segerblom came from behind to win the multihull title at the International Sailing Federation’s U.S. Sailing Youth World Qualifier and Youth Multihull Championship Monday in Long Beach.

Mason, 18, and Segerblom, 15, who are both Corona del Mar residents, beat Evan Miller and Taylor Reese of Panama City, Fla., and have advanced to the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Aarhus, Denmark in July.

Mason and Segerblom, sailing a Nacra 16 catamaran, also received the Arthur J. Stevens trophy for their national title.

Needing to win the final race, Mason and Segerblom were as far back as eighth, but crept to third before the final mark. Mason and Segerblom jibed inside of Miller and Reese just three boat lengths before the finish line to pull off their comeback.

Segerblom and Mason had lost last year’s youth title to Miller and his previous crew by a half-point in their first catamaran regatta.
