The 2007-08 prep girls’ basketball season gets underway this week. Below is a capsule look at teams from Edison, Huntington Beach and Ocean View. Marina didn’t supply information in time for this preview:
? Edison Chargers
League: Sunset
Head coach: Corey Kelly (seventh year)
2006-07 record: 17-9
League record/finish: 8-2 (second)
2007 CIF results: Reach third round of playoffs
Last CIF title won: 1987
Returning starters: Kelly Peterson (5-8, guard, Jr.); Mary Madden (5-10, forward, Jr.) ; Victoria Lokhorst (6-2, forward, Sr.).
Other returners: Myranda Hoggatt (5-8, guard, Jr.); Michelle Yamasaki (5-5, guard, Jr.); Dalia Wahab (5-6, guard, Sr.)
Newcomers: Bonnie Samuelson (6-2, guard/forward, Fr.); Priscila Cergol (5-7, guard, Jr.); Christina Marquette (5-8, guard, Fr.).
Team tidbits: Lokhorst has signed with the University of Santa Clara, Cergol moved here from Brazil and Kelly says Samuelson “will be one of the top freshmen†in southern California. Peterson was second-team all-league.
Coach’s outlook: “I think this year’s team has the ability to be very solid. They all work extremely hard and look to improve every day. The great thing is they are great kids, who not only get it done in athletics, but more importantly in life. They are great student/athletes with a lot of character who love to play together. With the solid foundation of returners, and the exciting newcomers, I think this should be a fun productive year.â€
Season opener: Defeated Irvine, 61-36, Monday in opening round of Century Tournament.
? Huntington Beach Oilers
League: Sea View
Head coach: Russell McClurg (fifth year)
2006-07 record: 22-6
League record/finish: (8-2, co-champion)
2007 CIF results: Advanced to second round of playoffs
Last CIF title won: 1978
Returning starters: Jasmine Erving (6-1, center, Sr.); Noelani Viloria (5-9, point guard, Jr.).
Other returners: Jade Viloria (5-2, guard, Sr.)
Newcomers: Sarah Hoagland (5-11, forward, Jr.); Meghan White (5-9, forward, Soph.); Chelsea Pinager (5-9, guard, Jr.); Sarah Boggeln (5-7, guard, Jr.).
Team tidbits: Erving, who was co-MVP of the Sea View League last year and averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks a game, has committed to Cal State Northridge on a full scholarship.
McClurg said the Oilers’ team captain, however, will miss the first part of the season because of a stress fracture on her foot. Another player, Maddie McKinley, is out for the season because of corrective spinal surgery. Noelani Viloria, a team co-captain, averaged 15 points, five rebounds and four assists and was a first-team, all-league pick last year.
McClurg says Hoagland will make a “big impact†this season and that White, Pinager and Boggeln are “new blood†that will help the team.
Coach’s outlook: “With the loss of eight seniors and only three returners from last year, I believe we have our work cut out for us as coaches. I expect co-captains Jasmine Erving and Noelani Viloria will give us some quality leadership. This is a very young team and I hope that they will be able to compete with the best teams in Orange County. I think Sarah Hoagland will give us a new physical tough presence inside the paint. Even though Jade Viloria is 5-foot-2, she is a four-year varsity player and this girl can shoot. I also believe that we are more of a half-court team due to the lack of team speed. We will have to slow down the game and get in our half court offense.â€
Season opener: Defeated JSerra, 41-39 Monday in opening round of Century Tournament.
? Ocean View
League: Golden West
Head coach: Jim Harris (fifth year)
2006-07 record: 15-10
League record/finish: 8-2 (champions)
2007 CIF results: Advanced to semifinals round
Returning starters: Clarissa Holz (first team all league); Kelsey Harris (second team all league), Cristina Kuehn (Hon. Mention all league).
Other returners: Amy Williams, Brittney Horton, Rebecca Sass.
Top newcomers: Rachel Sweezy, Sareen Ohanian, Sara Mitchell, Ashley Picotte, Suellen Ferriera, Amanda Peukert.
Team tidbits: Kelsey Harris is a four-year captain of the Seahawks and was a second-team all-league selection last year. Holz was a first-team all-league pick and Kuehn was honorable mention all-league.
Coach’s outlooks: “The team has great leadership, experience and play very well together. We’re a very good passing team. We will be more versatile than in past years.â€
Season opener: Today, Valley Christian Tournament.
