CORRECTION: Also in Thursday’s paper (“Concerned about new reality show?”), a photograph of Mayor Steve Rosansky incorrectly ran with a commentary from Newport Beach City Councilman Ed Selich and a photograph of Selich incorrectly ran with a quote from Rosansky.

Some residents are worried that MTV’s new reality show, “Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County,” will portray the city in a negative light. Are you concerned about the show giving the city an unflattering image?
Every year the Commodores recognize some truly outstanding student athletes and scholars from Newport Beach high schools. I am hopeful that the stories of these amazing young people are also reflected in this program. There is so much more to our community than what you may see on MTV.

Most parents aren’t entertained by unruly teenagers. I’m concerned about teenager issues and am partnering with the police department, school district and local PTAs to organize a forum entitled “Keep Your Teen Safe.” Among the topics are Internet Safety, MySpace and other security issues, teen driving, teen suicide/depression and underage drinking. The forum will be held this autumn.

Yes, but only slightly. Newport Beach provides the unparalleled backdrop that the producers of “Newport Harbor” were looking for in terms of Southern California beauty and glamour. Frankly, I think most people will view the program as just more of the same recycled reality show genre and not associate Newport Beach or its residents with it any more than their own hometown.
ED SELICH
We should always be concerned about the image that we project to the world. The city spends millions of dollars every year through the Conference and Visitors Bureau to portray the positive aspects of life in Newport Beach. I am hopeful that the viewing public will realize that there is not much real in reality TV.
