CITY FOCUS:Trainers flex for calendar

The trainers of the Laguna Health Club are showing their hearts — and some skin — for a good cause.

A new 2008 calendar features various scenic locations around Laguna Beach, as well as the club’s trainers to add a little eye candy.

Twenty percent of the calendar’s profits will be donated to the AIDS Services Foundation to help fight childhood HIV/AIDS.

According to Doug Schulein, who owns the gym and was responsible for producing the calendar, it started out as a marketing idea for the 600-member gym and evolved into a benefit project.

Schulein said he was excited about how the calendar came out. He was especially fond of the photography, done by Joseph Scarnici.

What Schulein said he loved most about the calendar is he feels it shows more than just skin and the beach, it’s also fun. Though many of the photos feature Laguna’s oceans, there are also shots of downtown as well as homes. There’s even one photo of a couple of the trainer models admiring some of Laguna’s art — in briefs.

“It’s kind of quirky, just like the gym,” Schulein said.

Teo Moore is featured prominently in the calendar and grew up in Laguna Beach. Moore said he was glad to give his hometown a little exposure.

“I missed the Laguna reality show, I wanted to help make it famous somehow,” Moore said.

Moore said he knew many victims of HIV/AIDS growing up and was glad to be a part of an effort to help them

“It feels good to be able to do something to help these people,” he said.

Schulein has big hopes for he calendar. He said he is trying to break it into large markets and stores. He also hopes to make a new calendar annually.

The calendar is currently available at the Coast Hardware, 240 Broadway St., Thee Foxes’ Trot, 260 Forest Ave. and the T Shirt Co., 387 S. Coast Highway.
