CdM quartet Gothia champs

GOTHENBERG, Sweden — As Marilyn Scott read from an e-mail Saturday afternoon, she couldn’t help but laugh, picturing her granddaughter and her friends getting their groove on at a club in Sweden.
Scott’s granddaughter, Lindsey Luke, and her teammates Scarlett Fallon, Tessa Andujar and Jordan Dillion had a reason to dance. The four girls, who will be freshmen at Corona del Mar High, helped lead the Slammers Futbol club to the girls’ age-15 division championship in the Gothia Cup Saturday. The Slammers defeated a team from Baton Rouge, La., 4-0.
A parent of one of the Slammers’ players wrote in an e-mail:
The Slammers are youth world champs. The weather was rainy. They dominated the game … They will head to the disco at night.
“I’m sure it was safe,” Scott said. “We saw pictures of all them in a group dancing over there.”
In her home in Palm Desert, Scott followed her granddaughter’s team throughout the Gothia Cup, known as the youth equivalent of the World Cup, with 65 countries competing. Scott couldn’t help but be excited for Luke.
As the Slammers’ goalie, Luke was largely responsible for the club team’s seven shutouts in nine games. The Slammers outscored opponents, 41-2, in the tournament that started on Monday.
The Slammers’ team, which is a 14-and-under squad, won three straight on Friday. Scott said she read that the girls went dancing that night, too.
On Saturday, Scott also received a phone call from Luke’s sister, Allison, and mother, Melody.
“I picked it up and it was Allison,” Scott said. “ She said, ‘Omie,’ which means Grandma in German, ‘We won the whole thing.’ There was a lot of hooting and hollering in the background.”
The Slammers hope to celebrate again next week.
From Sweden, the Slammers will be traveling to Frisco, Texas, where they will play in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, which begins Wednesday and ends July 29. The Slammers won the Far West Regionals to advance to the National Championships.
