Former Oiler sets NCAA career record
Wagner College softball player Victoria Batistelli, a former standout at Huntington Beach High, set an NCAA career record earlier this month when she was hit by a pitch for the 55th time in her career.
Batistelli, a junior at the Staten Island, N.Y. school, was has been plunked hit by pitch 36 times this year, which led the NCAA. At one point during the season, she was hit by a pitch in 11 straight games.
Her career total passes the record previously held by Michelle Reeve of Centenary University set from 1995 to ’98.
Batistelli finished the season with a .313 batting average, had 11 home runs, scored 35 runs, held a .627 slugging percentage, had a .503 on-base average and broke her own school record (46, set last year) by recording 49 RBIS.
Batistelli has played on Wagner teams that have won more than 30 games in each of the past three years, a school record.
Sluggers camp starts Monday
The Huntington Beach-based Sluggers Summer Baseball Camps opens its doors Monday with the first of four camps at Ocean View High.
The camps are open to ages 8 to 12 and will focus on all aspects of baseball, combining team fundamentals and individualized position instruction.
The first camp starts Monday and runs through July 12. The second camp this month will run July 23-26.
In August, weekly camp dates are Aug. 13-16 and Aug. 27-30.
The cost per camper is $225 for one week and $400 for two weeks of instruction.
All players should wear proper baseball attire, bring water and a sack lunch.
Ocean View High is at the corner of Warner Avenue and Gothard Street.

Youth football camp begins July 16
Edison High will present a youth football camp July 16 to July 20 at the school’s varsity practice field.
The camp, held daily from 10 a.m. to noon, is open to boys who will be entering the sixth-, seventh- or eighth-grade in the fall. Campers will be instructed in techniques and skills needed for all offensive and defensive positions and includes both individual and group instruction.
Edison’s offensive and defensive schemes will be introduced during the camp, which features Chargers head Coach Dave White and his coaching staff.
The cost is $50 per camper.
