DiGiulio wins, continues to show his ranking

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Newport Beach resident Joseph DiGiulio, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the boys’ 12 division, defeated Thien Nguyen 6-3, 6-1 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 105th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships.

DiGiulio, who is unseeded because he hasn’t played in Southern California as much, will face fourth-seeded Gage Brymer of Irvine in a semifinal today at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

The championship is Monday at 11 a.m. at Los Cab.

Third-seeded Nicolas Meister defeated Fabian Matthews, who will be a senior at Corona del Mar High, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 Saturday afternoon in the boys’ 18 singles division.

With the win, Meister advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament.

Matthews and his doubles teammate Ryan Cheung, the No. 2 seed play for the boys’ 18 doubles title against Chris Ho and Daniel Nguyen today at 3 p.m. at Los Cab.
