Arst promotes organ donations

Newport Beach activist Phil Arst spent the better part of 2006 gathering donations for his political group’s ballot measure, but it’s a donation he received personally that has been most precious to him.
About 2 1/2 years ago, Arst got a new liver. That’s why this month he’s encouraging people to learn more about organ donation.
On Tuesday, he accepted a proclamation from Newport Beach Mayor Steve Rosansky recognizing April as organ donation awareness month.
Arst is a member of Southern California organ procurement group One Legacy and he said he was the group’s 2006 ambassador of the year as a volunteer and transplant recipient.
Arst speaks to Rotary clubs and groups to encourage organ donation, and he’ll participate in a 5K run and walk to raise money for the cause on April 28 in Fullerton.
“When I knew I’d be needing an organ, I got started on this promoting donation,” he said. “I owe the community something after being fortunate to get the organ.”
The waiting list for organs is long, and the supply is short. Arst said because of his rare blood type, he received a liver earlier than he might have otherwise.
“There’s such a critical shortage of organs about a third of those on the waiting list will die,” Arst said. “That keeps me going.”
