Golf tourney to benefit youth

The Third Annual Dave LaBohn Memorial — Spring Classic Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 14, at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course.

Laguna Beach City Councilman Kelly Boyd resurrected his former Spring Classic Golf Tournament, inactive for years, after losing a longtime friend and golf partner to cancer in 2004.

Proceeds from the golf tournament will be split between the Laguna Beach High School Girls and Boys Golf Teams and to CSP (Community Services Program) Laguna Beach Youth Shelter, which provides temporary shelter to teens in transition.

The Laguna Beach CSP program goals are to stabilize the youth and facilitate family reunification through offering services of emergency and temporary shelter for teens aged 13-17.

CSP program services include three-week stabilization and reunification, 24-hour supervision and a structured daily program, assessment and case management, individual, group and family counseling, academic tutoring, prevention education, and life skills development activities. After-care services include Grad Group, Parent Group, counseling, mentoring, follow-ups, and referrals.

Tournament cost is $150 and includes golf “best ball,” gift bag with golf shirt, tee prizes and dinner.

Check and entry forms with shirt size, and designation of individual or foursome, must be received no later than April 30.

Local student performs in folk play

Laguna Beach resident Elizabeth Smith will perform with the South Coast Repertory’s Junior Players in Carol Korty’s “Riding the Wind: Story Plays from Old China,” with folk melodies for songs arranged by Shu-Hui Chin.

The play, directed by Joe Alanes, will be performed at 1 and 4 p.m. on April 14, 15, 21 and 22.

The Junior Players are 14 young actors who became SCR Players through audition after two years in the program. Classes meet twice a week, and the Players participate in daily rehearsals in the weeks preceding their public performances.

“Riding the Wind” is set in an ancient Chinese marketplace as villagers mingle to buy and sell their wares. The Wind Dragon blows in, bringing with him four exciting folk tales that make old and distant places seem new and near. Each story features a different woman on a journey of discovery that will help her grow and understand herself.

Thurston to be ‘Out on the Town’

Thurston Middle School’s spring fundraiser, “Out on the Town 3,” will be held the evening of April 27, and will feature a progressive walking tour of restaurants in town for appetizers and drinks, with a buffet supper, desserts and dancing to DJ tunes as the finale.

Proceeds will benefit Thurston’s PTA and 8th grade graduation.

There will be two assigned stops, the first at 6 p.m. and the second at 6:45 p.m. Restaurants hosting the first two stops include Anastasia, Cabana, Cedar Creek Inn, Romeo Cucina, and Sundried Tomato Café.

Supper will be served at 7:30 p.m. at Ocean Brewing Company. Zinc Café will provide dessert. A postcard confirming the two designated stops will be mailed to each guest.

Capacity is limited; the event regularly sells out.

College student wins design award for logo

Laguna College of Art & Design Junior Katie Corcran was honored by representatives of the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club on April 4 for her winning logo design to represent this year’s Grapes for Grads event.

Corcran’s design was selected by event organizers from a pool of more than 50 entries, and received a $500 award.

Grapes for Grads is a wine tasting and scholarship fundraiser that will be held at Tivoli Too on Sunday, April 29.

Proceeds from the event will benefit students of Laguna College of Art & Design and Laguna Beach High School.

Event highlights include local and regional wine tasting, live entertainment and a silent auction.

At last year’s event, $6,000 in scholarships was given out to four local students. This year, organizers anticipate a sell-out event to raise $8,000 in scholarships.

Baha’is award local students, leaders

The Baha’is of Laguna Beach held their Second Annual Baha’I Honorary Awards Program on Feb. 28.

Sixteen students from the Laguna Beach Unified School District were recipients of an award for outstanding philanthropic services. Students received a trophy and a $50 scholarship. The principals of each school nominated an adult school leader who was also given an award.

The evening began with appetizers and a talk by Ray Zimmerman, a member of the UCI Center for Women and Men.

Young performers from the community then performed music, and District Superintendent Theresa Daem was the keynote speaker.

Businesses invited to donate to orchestra

The Laguna Beach High School Jazz Orchestra is now seeking silent auction items from local businesses and jazz enthusiasts who wish to support the high school music department.

The silent auction is held at the annual dinner-dance fundraiser, “Dining and Dancing Under the Stars,” and is scheduled this year for Friday, May 18, at Tivoli Terrace.

Church offers free parenting workshop

A free Parenting Workshop will be sponsored by the Moms’ Group at the Laguna Presbyterian Church from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, April 20 in the church parlor, 415 Forest Ave.

.The workshop, “Nine Techniques to Enhance Your Child’s Self-Esteem,” will be presented by Trecia Davis, MA, parenting educator.

Davis is certified by the International Network for Children and Families to teach the Redirecting Children’s Behavior course. Her qualifications include a bachelor’s in home economics, and a master’s in communications from USC. Davis is also a former actress who trained at UCLA’s professional acting program and with the Groundlings.

There is no cost to attend Moms’ Group meetings. Infants may accompany their parent, and child care for older babies and preschoolers is available for a small donation. Child care scholarships are also available.
