Len Wood closes South Laguna

Len Wood’s Indian Territory has closed its South Laguna location at 1590 So. Coast Highway, which opened last year, and moved its collection of Western and Indian art to its sister location at 305-D No. Coast Highway.

Japanese ‘Hula’ screening

The Laguna Beach Film Society will screen the Japanese film “Hula Girls” at 7 p.m. on April 19 at South Coast Cinema, across from Main Beach. The film will be followed by a discussion at the Wells Fargo Bank Community Room. Tickets are $15, and may be purchased at the box office.

In the film, young women in a small Japanese coal town look to revive their declining fortunes by building a Hawaiian village tourist attraction and learning the forbidden dance of the Hula.

The winner of Japan’s Academy Award for Best Movie and Best Director (Song Ill Lee), “Hula Girls” was Japan’s submission to the 2007 Oscars for Best Foreign Film.

Van Cliburn winner to perform

Laguna Beach Live! presents 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Finalist Davide Cabassi in concert at 8 p.m. April 14 at the Laguna Beach Artists’ Theatre, 625 Park Ave.

At the 2005 Van Cliburn competition, Cabassi received fourth place in the overall competition.

Cabassi will perform Bach’s Capriccio in B-flat major; Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23, Op. 57, Appassionata; Debussy’s Estampes; De Falla’s El Amor Brujo and Ravel’s La Valse.

Harlem comes to Laguna Woods

Gallimaufry Performing Arts will perform the musical revue “Harlem Renaissance” at the Clubhouse Three Auditorium in Laguna Woods.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 14. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.gallimaufry.info or by calling (949) 499-5060.

Harlem Renaissance is a concert of “Songs and Dances” of the New York jazz era between the 1910’s and 1930’s.

The show will feature a live jazz orchestra playing the music of Eubie Blake, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington.

Starring in the show will be TV personality and Tony-Award-nominated Broadway actress Jonelle Allen. Allen played Grace in “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” from 1993 to 1999.

An encore performance of Harlem Renaissance will be presented as part of Gallimaufry’s 2007 Arts Festival, at its Dance Day/Songs in the Sand celebration at 4:30 p.m. April 28 on Main Beach.

Museum event welcomes kids

The 2007 Imagination Celebration, a festival of arts for children, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Drive.

This year’s celebration theme is “Creative Faces in Creative Places”. The museum’s theme is “Making Faces,” and will focus on the individual child with hands-on art projects which include mask-making, “face rockets” and “face travel,” personalized ‘zines (small books/magazines) and a “construction production” building project.

The Laguna Beach Public Schools Honors Choir also will perform a medley of songs. They will be joined by the Music to Grow on Recorder and Song Flute group and the Gallimaufry Performing Arts troupe.

Rohrer Fine Art revisits Golden Age

Rohrer Fine Art will have an opening reception for its new Golden Age exhibition Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The show will feature a blend of gilded antiquities and contemporary art, and will run through June 2.

Dance company premieres

Gallimaufry & Greene, Gallimaufry Performing Arts’ new contemporary dance company, will premiere itself and a new production entitled “A Night at the Movies” on April 18 and 19 at [seven-degrees], 891 Laguna Canyon Rd.

The show will be at 7:30 p.m. April 18 and 7 p.m. April 19; tickets are $45 for April 18 and $125 for the special Gala Performance on April 19.

The Gala Performance will include a special pre-performance party, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and post-performance reception.

“A Night at the Movies” is a contemporary dance piece based on famous “black and white” movie scenes that impacted choreographer Sean Greene’s life.
