A man reported to be a Costa Mesa resident died early Tuesday after crashing his motorcycle into a disabled vehicle in the carpool lane of the eastbound Foothill (I-210) Freeway in Azusa, Calif.
William McKernan, 37, was driving his red 2001 Yamaha motorcycle at an unknown speed at approximately 5:20 a.m. when he collided with a gray Honda, which had crashed into the center divider about five minutes earlier, blocking the lane, said California Highway Patrol officer Edmund Zorrilla. Officers are searching for the driver of the Honda, who fled the scene on foot prior to the second accident.
Zorrilla said it was likely McKernan did not initially see the vehicle because it was still dark outside, and was unable to slow down in time to avoid sideswiping it, pinning himself under the bike and causing fatal injuries.
