MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Penn StateIRVINE — Matt Webber blasted a match-high 19 kills on .500 hitting to lead the No. 2-ranked Anteaters to a 30-26, 27-30, 30-21, 30-25 nonconference victory over No. 6 Penn State Wednesday.

Cole Reinholm added 14 kills on .667 hitting and Taylor Wilson had 16 kills for UC Irvine (21-3). Brian Thornton dished out 56 assists and Webber added a team-high seven digs and two aces.

Orange Coast def. Irvine ValleyCOSTA MESA — Kevin Welch recorded 18 kills, six digs and four aces to help lead the Pirates to a 23-30, 26-30, 30-22, 30-22, 15-13 Pacific Coast Conference win Wednesday.

Matt Knutson added 13 kills, Rick Schroeder had nine kills and nine block assists, while Brett Lessman produced 12 kills and seven block assists. Neil Bell had eight block assists and Alika De Rego chipped in with 17 digs for the Pirates (9-1, 4-0 in conference).

OCC setters Keith Thornton and Trevor Holmes also contributed with 38 and 19 assists, respectively.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 10, Illinois Institute 1COSTA MESA — Keegan Freeman went four for five with two doubles as the Lions won their seventh game in a row Wednesday.

Vanguard’s Nick Vaughn (2-1) went the distance for the win, striking out six and allowing one run on four hits.

The Lions (11-6) blew the nonconference game open with a five-run fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, New Mexico 3IRVINE — The No. 28-ranked UCI women’s tennis team won its 11th straight match Wednesday at UCI.

UCI junior Jessica Broadfoot clinched the win at No. 5 singles for the Anteaters (16-2), with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Nora Quintal of No. 53-ranked New Mexico. Also earning singles wins for the ‘Eaters were junior Inna Agababian and sophomore Heidi Kaloi.
