BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Best of the West TournamentSAN DIEGO — Corona del Mar High used a balanced attack to win three matches in pool play and advance to today’s Gold Division, which is the round of 16 for the 32-team tournament hosted by Poway High at Epic Volleyball Club Friday.

Gus Ellis had seven kills, Blaine Nielsen six and Phil Bannon added 23 assists to lead Corona del Mar (5-0) to a 25-21, 25-16 win over Mt. Carmel of San Diego.

Jeff Carlson led the Sea Kings with five kills in a 25-9, 25-12 victory over Long Beach Poly. Dylan Davis added four kills and Spencer Brown seven digs.

Carlson and Nielsen then spiked nine kills each for CdM’s 25-15, 20-25, 25-12 win over Clovis. Ellis contributed seven kills and two blocks and Bannon chipped in with 30 assists.

The Sea Kings face Harvard-Westlake today at 9 a.m.

Best of the West TournamentSAN DIEGO — Weston Dunlap helped Newport Harbor High to a 2-1 record after pool play in the tournament at Epic Volleyball Club Friday.

Dunlap, who recently committed to UCLA, recorded 14 kills to lead the Sailors to a 25-27, 25-19, 15-10 win over Laguna Beach. The victory was a bit of revenge for Newport Harbor, which lost to the Breakers in four games on Wednesday at Laguna Beach.

Dunlap had 12 kills and Tucker Peluses nine in the Sailors’ 25-20, 25-16 win over Thousand Oaks.

Newport Harbor (2-2) ended its day losing to Santa Barbara, 25-27, 21-25. Dunlap led the Sailors with nine kills. Boyd Grubbs had six kills and Peluses added eight.

Newport Harbor will face Clovis West today at 9 a.m.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 4,CORONA DEL MAR — Austin Elliott threw a four-hit complete shutout to get his first win of the year as the Sea Kings wrapped up their final Frank Lerner Division game in the Newport Elks Tournament Friday.

Michael DiRocco and Greg Garte each drove in runs in a three-run first inning for CdM (3-2). DiRocco was one of three Sea Kings to hit doubles. The other two were Elliott and Mitch Sands.

The Sea Kings (3-2) play host to Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Estancia 9, Westminster 2COSTA MESA — Taylor West went two for two with an RBI triple in the Eagles’ three-run fourth inning in a nonleague game Friday.

Kiele Brown drove in two runs with a triple for Estancia, which blew the game open in the second with six runs.

The Eagles (2-1) play today in the semifinals of the Costa Mesa Tournament against University at 9 a.m.

Saddleback 110, Estancia 46COSTA MESA — Jeff Crosson won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 26.7 seconds and also won the 500 freestyle at 5:42.1 in Estancia’s nonleague meet Friday.

Kyle Lux finished third in the 200 freestyle for the Eagles, who compete again Tuesday at home against Sage Hill School at 3 p.m.

Noah Molnar had three goals and two assists for CdM (3-1), with David Kidushim, Casey Bush and Ryan Mix also scoring. Goalie Andrew Noto made nine saves, and defenseman Nick Taylor had a team-leading seven groundballs.

Connor Pinkston and Michael Danova added assists for the Sea Kings, and Kevin Kottke and Kyle Tomlin played good defense.
