Sea Kings sweep Battle of Bay

CORONA DEL MAR — Halfway through the Corona del Mar High, Newport Harbor track and field dual meet, Spencer Aguilar felt confident enough to proclaim he would win two more events to bring his total to four on the day. He might even run in another race he said.

The Sea Kings senior did not run, but he did fulfill the remainder of his prophecy, eclipsing his Battle of the Bay performance last season where he won three events.

Aguilar took the 110-meter hurdles (15.4 seconds), the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.6), the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and the triple jump (36-4 1/2 ).

Corona del Mar won the boys’ competition, 71.5-55, and the girls’ competition, 71-56, Wednesday.

“I’ve never done that before,” Aguilar said of his accomplishment. “It goes past me winning four events. It means 20 points for the team.”

Aguilar added it was strong way to start the season, in the second dual meet, but he was not alone.

Five other athletes were double winners on the day. Newport Harbor junior Nate Talbott took the shot put and discus with throws of 36-4 1/2 and 130 respectively. Talbott said it will be difficult to follow Bo Taylor, now at UCLA, who won a national championship in the discus and set a state-meet record in the event, as well, last year.

“It’s kind of intimidating,” Talbott said. “I’m going to do my best to fill those shoes.”

For the girls, the Sea Kings’ Tiffany Liu won two events, the long jump (17-3) and triple jump (35- 1/2 ) and finished second in two others, following up her performance a week earlier, where she won four events against Fountain Valley.

“It’s a little bit tough,” Liu said of competing in four events. “You get used to it though.”

Newport Harbor senior Jessica Robson matched her personal best in the high jump at 5-4 and also won the 100 hurdles in 15.8.

“I’m really excited,” Robson said of her jump. “It’s the second time I’ve done it this year. I think it’s going to be a good year.”

Corona del Mar’s Claire Schmidt won the 200 (26.9) and 400 (1:00.3) and junior Shelby Buckley won the 800 (2:15.9) and the 1,600 (5:08.8). Sea Kings Coach Bill Sumner said he lightened the load on his runners with the Irvine Invitational on Saturday. In the future Buckley might run the 3,200 as well.

“For some reason it wasn’t like I wished I was out there,” said Buckley who was cheering teammates throughout the race. “It might be like that later this season.”

Sailors senior Melissa Mead won the 3,200 in 11:31.8.

“I really like it,” said Mead who ran the event for the first time this season. “I just like longer runs. It just takes trusting your lungs.”

In the boys 3,200, Sea Kings junior Thomas Dialynas and Sailors sophomore Jake Dawson were tied with a lap remaining. Dialynas pulled away down the stretch for the victory by slightly over a second.

Both Newport Harbor Coach Eric Tweit and Sumner said the Battle of the Bay is a good way to get the competitive juices flowing at the start of the season.

“I was really happy, a lot of people did well,” Tweit said. “Jessica Robson had a solid day and scored some points for us. I was really pleased with our short relay. We’ve got some really good freshmen. We’re notorious for our slow starts, but we started fast this year which is nice to see. We are a head of what I expected.”

Sumner said the Battle of the Bay has become more competitive over the years.

“It’s nice to win Battle of the Bay; track athletes look at it like just like every other team, like football and volleyball,” Sumner said. “We’re going to do well this year.”
