ARTS COMMISSION WRAP-UP

The following is from the Feb. 26 meeting of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission:

Marine life sculpture approved

The commission discussed and unanimously approved the installation of “Laguna Locals,” a design by Terry Thornsley that includes two sculptural elements , for the Crescent Bay Point Park Sculpture Competition.

Thornsley presented maquettes of his sculptures, which include a frolicking sea lion and a cormorant, and the commission had a short discussion with him.

The design was created to minimize impacts on views.

Judges selected for Art That’s Small

The commission named Julita Jones, John Eagle and Betty Shelton as adjudicators in the 2007 “Art That’s Small at City Hall” exhibition, which runs from March 26 through May 3.

Temporary sculpture sites discussed

The commission reviewed sites for future temporary sculpture installations in Laguna.

Sculpture committee chair Dora Wexell listed sites that included Alta Laguna Park, the new pedestrian light by the Festival of Arts, the beach entrances at Thalia and Oak Streets, Heisler Park and the Laguna Canyon frontage road that runs parallel to Laguna Canyon Road next to the Boys & Girls’ Club and Sawdust Festival.

The commission agreed that it would be best to focus on the proposed Civic Arts District and chose to follow up on the sites in front of the festival and on the frontage road.
