CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar High senior Tiffany Liu got off to a hot start, winning four events for the Sea Kings in their track and field nonleague season opener against Fountain Valley on Wednesday at CdM.
The CdM girls won, 74-53, while the boys lost, 75-51.
Liu took first place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.8 seconds), 300 hurdles (52.3), the long jump (15 feet, four inches) and the triple jump (34-10 1/2 ) for the CdM girls, the four-time defending Pacific Coast League champions.
Also standing out for the girls was freshman Brynn Johnson, who won the 100 meters (13.1 seconds), finished second in the 200 (27.6) and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay.
Junior Shelby Buckley, who finished second in Division III in the 1,600 meters last year for CdM, won the event in 5:09.6 on Wednesday.
“We were trying new things,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said of his girls’ effort. “It was business as usual. We used today as a ‘get ready’ for the season.”
On the boys’ side, CdM freshman Alex Swigert won the 300 hurdles in 41.9 seconds, the long jump (18-6.5) and finished second in the 110 hurdles.
“Two firsts and a second,” Sumner said. “Not bad for his first meet.”
Senior Tommy Hutchison won the 800 meters (2:03.4) and 1,600 meters (4:30.2). Senior Spencer Aguilar won the 110 high hurdles (15.4 seconds and finished second in the triple jump (34-6).
But Sumner said due to a miscommunication, the CdM boys didn’t even run the 200 meters, conceding valuable points to Fountain Valley.
“It was time for the race, and we couldn’t find our guys,” he said. “It happens in the first meet of the season. Not that I’m happy about it, but it happens.”
CdM next plays host to Back Bay rival Newport Harbor on Wednesday.
“We’re looking forward to that one,” Sumner said.
