Man jumps from bridge

NEWPORT BEACH — A man jumped into Newport Harbor from the Coast Highway bridge around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Thomas Fischbacher said.

He jumped into the water after officers confronted him while he was walking along the bridge, police said.

He was wearing a black backpack, which sank by the time a Harbor Patrol boat pulled the man from the water.

Shivering in the cool air and crying, the man complained of chest pain. Later, when he was in an ambulance, he told police he had a warrant out for his arrest. It’s unclear what the warrant is for, as police were not able to match the name the man gave to a name in a police database.

Police took the man to Newport Beach Jail for booking. The Harbor Patrol was looking for the backpack Wednesday night.
