SURFING SOAPBOX:Surfing on the road

The new year is alive and well, and the Surfing Soapbox is going global for a couple of weeks.

First stop will be the very pretty beach town of Sea Ranch, about an hour south of Mendocino.

Known for it’s beautiful coastline seascapes and small-town atmosphere, it sounds like the perfect place for the nonprofit organization Save the Waves to hold our annual board of director’s environmental retreat.

Save the Waves is an environmental coalition dedicated to preserving the world’s surf spots. Our goal is to preserve and protect the best surfing locations on the planet and to educate the public about their value.

Five days of surfing and writing sounds more than great, with my only worry being the cold. After all, it’s been freezing here, which means it might just be frozen there.

From there, the Surfing Soapbox will be jumping on another plane and heading to the Canary Islands for two weeks of yet more surfing and writing.

This time I will be writing a feature about the environmental concerns plaguing their coastline and all but ruining some of the best surf breaks the world has to offer.

Well, that’s what I have been told, and from the photographs I have seen so far, it seems such claims may be accurate.

From there, the Surfing Soapbox will be stopping off in London for a day or two of sightseeing and perhaps a bit of pub-crawling as well.

But don’t worry — I will be keeping you updated with all the latest details and tales from travels afar, because rain or shine, frozen and wet, or sunny and warm, the Surfing Soapbox has to be written.

Peace.
