COMMUNITY & CLUBS:Matters of the heart
Jane Glen Haas, founder of Women Sage and the Girl Scout Council Orange County, will receive the Matters of the Heart Award from Soroptimist International Newport Harbor on Feb. 9 at a luncheon being held at the Turnip Rose in Costa Mesa.
According to Soroptimist Ann Schultz, the luncheon begins at 11 a.m. with a reception and auction. The Women’s Opportunity Award (given to female heads of households reentering the workforce) and the Violet Richardson Award (given to young women providing service to their community) will be presented after lunch has been served.
Tickets are $60. Call Carolyn Turner at (714) 840-8954 for more information. Luncheon proceeds support Soroptimist International projects, such as Project Independence — for women survivors of war in Bosnia, Rwanda and Afghanistan — as well as local and international projects that promote human rights and the status of women.
ELKS DELIVERED CHRISTMAS CHEER
On Dec. 23, the Newport Harbor Elks Lodge gave out 136 food baskets, including a turkey, toys and gift cards to local families. Included in that were 44 families in the Marine Corp, 37 in the National Guard, nine at the Battered Women’s Center and 46 local, low-income families.
More than 600 toys and $6,000 in gift cards were given. The Newport Harbor Elks opened its doors at 9 a.m. to host the recipients to lunch and treat the children to Santa Claus.
A DOUBLE LOSS
The Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club is mourning the death of member Brad Schwarz and his wife of 63 years, Grace, both of whom died in late December.
Brad Schwarz practiced law in Costa Mesa for more than 50 years. He also served on the school board and was a long-time member and past president of the Lions Club. Both were great people and will be missed by family and friends. A double funeral service was held recently at the Riverside National Cemetery.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SERVICE CLUBS
Terry Burchynsky, sponsored by Gloria Kimmel; and Jeanne Samoszuky, sponsored by Lynn Seaholm, joined the Harbor Mesa Lions Club. Lions Past District Gov. Barbara Hayward performed the induction ceremonies.
WORTH REPEATING
From the Thought for the Day, as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council.
“The leader can never close the gap between himself and the group. If he does, he is no longer what he must be. He must walk a tightrope between the consent he must win and the control he must exert.”
— VINCE LOMBARDI
